28 janvier 2022 - MAJ 28/01/2022 1805 Science-fiction Fantastique Horreur Après le film Alive et la série Kingdom - deux productions sud-coréennes -, et plus globalement Daybreak, Black Summer ou Army of the Dead ces trois dernières années, Netflix a sorti ce 28 janvier sa dernière production sud-coréenne autour du zombie All Of Us Are Dead, adaptée du webtoon Now at our School de Joo Dong-geun. Une série pleine de bonnes idées, mais handicapée par son histoire à rallonge qui peine à se démarquer des innombrables oeuvres du genre qui pullulent sur le grand et le petit écran. THE RUNNING DEAD Après nous avoir fait bouffer du zombie régulièrement et la créature pullulant un peu partout dans l'industrie avec les The Walking Dead World Beyond, Peninsula..., il était peu plausible que Netflix transcende un genre qui a de plus en plus de mal à se renouveler avec son All Of Us Are Dead. Le point de départ de l'intrigue est donc assez conventionnel, avec un cas zéro, une première infection, une situation qui dégénère très vite et la formation d’un groupe de survivants. La nouvelle série a cependant de quoi contenter les amateurs d'apocalypse zombies en ce qui concerne l'ambiance horrifique et survivaliste, c'est-à-dire le coeur de l'histoire. Les épisodes offrent ainsi tout ce qu’on peut y chercher des carnages, des morts déchirantes et sadiques de la part du showrunner, des montées d'adrénaline et évidemment une violence graphique et viscérale assumée. HOLD THE DOOR Mais au-delà des boucheries et autres découpages de viande humaine, la série est encore plus ludique quand elle met en place des situations tendues et extrêmes où le groupe doit utiliser tout ce qui compose son environnement du moment - et notamment le mobilier urbain et les équipements de l'école - pour se sortir de son étau. La plupart du temps, c’est fait intelligemment, avec plein d’idées de mise en scène pour installer de la tension avec le plus d’inventivité possible, aussi bien visuelle que dans l’écriture des scènes elles-mêmes, en mettant au point des plans toujours plus astucieux et complexes. Dans les premiers épisodes tout particulièrement, la réalisation est assez nerveuse avec caméra à l’épaule, mais peu de montage pour étirer les scènes de massacres pour faire de courts plans-séquences et intensifier l’hystérie et le chaos ambiants. La représentation des zombies - qui ne sont pas vraiment des zombies, mais tout comme - fonctionne elle aussi la plupart du temps, que ce soit au niveau des bruitages avec des rugissements gutturaux inquiétants et leurs articulations qui craquent exagérément, ou même au niveau de leur gestuelle contorsionniste, ces derniers faisant partie des zombies hyperactifs qui agissent en super-prédateurs. Les gestes barrières TROP DE GENS À MANGER Malheureusement, comme on peut s’y attendre avec 12 épisodes de presque une heure chacun, l'intrigue de la série s'étire et se boursouffle inutilement. Le principal groupe de survivants est pris au piège dans un lycée, mais le scénario ne fait pas de l'établissement une unité de lieu. Les épisodes se baladent au contraire aux quatre coins de la ville pour suivre toute une galerie de personnages et dérouler des sous-intrigues qui partent dans tous les sens et étouffent la dynamique des premiers épisodes. La narration se retrouve donc éclatée en plusieurs morceaux. Si certains personnages sont totalement accessoires au scénario - l'influenceur suicidaire pour ne citer que lui - d'autres auraient pu être mieux exploités s'ils n'étaient pas introduits superficiellement et ne restaient pas hors champ pendant 1 ou 2 épisodes avant que le scénario trouve un moyen de s’en débarrasser. High school of the dead À mi-parcours, la série a même du mal à se concentrer sur une seule action à la fois. Par moments, le scénario présente des situations périlleuses, mais plutôt que de maintenir la tension ou de la faire monter crescendo, les scènes se retrouvent entrecoupées d’autres scènes qui concernent d'autres personnages dont on se fiche royalement sur le moment. La série aurait donc vraiment gagné à avoir une toile de fond beaucoup moins dense pour avoir une écriture moins bordélique, et à se recentrer sur les survivants du lycée et leur tentative de fuite pour être plus efficace et percutante. Surtout que le ton et l'utilisation de certains codes des teen séries fonctionnent assez bien. Le scénario tire sur des ficelles assez grosses, présente quelques situations peu crédibles et plusieurs profils stéréotypés, ce qui n'empêche pas la plupart des personnages adolescents d’être attachants ou intéressants. Surtout, elle raconte quelque chose sur l’état d’esprit fragile de la jeunesse et sa fracture générationnelle avec ses aînés, tout ça à travers les codes de la société sud-coréenne. Le pire moment pour tomber amoureux ? CORONAVIRUS Cette multiplication des points de vue et les différentes ramifications de l’histoire servent surtout une logique de surexplicitation des sous-textes qu’on retrouve habituellement dans les histoires de zombies, que ce soit sur notre propre déshumanisation, l'autodestruction de notre espèce ou l’inversion du rapport de force entre dominants et dominés. Pour surligner ces clés de lecture, la série s’attarde peu subtilement sur le pourquoi du comment est apparu le premier zombie. Les épisodes lui donnent ainsi une origin story foireuse et s'avance sur le sentier généralement casse-gueule des zombies évolués », avec des personnages mi-humains mi-zombies. Il est assez simple d'y voir un autre parallèle un peu maladroit avec les adolescents pris entre deux âges, ce que soulignent d’ailleurs certaines répliques avec encore plus d’insistance. Et tant qu’à parler de sous-entendus et analogies mal amenés ou grossiers, les allusions à la pandémie actuelle et les rapprochements que tente le scénario étaient eux aussi dispensables. Et ce même si cela participe à ancrer un peu plus l’histoire dans notre réalité. Certains épisodes citent ainsi des films comme Dernier train pour Busan ou Bienvenue à Zombieland pour un aspect méta qui n'est jamais vraiment assumé. C'est ce qu'on appelle tenir la jambe La série traîne en longueur, passe trop de temps à justifier son propos et se perd alors qu’elle avait un concept, certes simple et convenu, mais qui pouvait être plus efficace et divertissant, ce qu’on attend généralement de ce genre d’histoire. Et comme All Of Us Are Dead est une sorte de combo gagnant série pour adolescents + nouvelle série sud-coréenne + zombies, on peut d'ores et déjà se poser des questions sur une éventuelle saison 2. Encore plus si la série cartonne dans les prochains jours. La série a le mérite d’avoir une fin ouverte qui pourrait totalement se suffire à elle-même, mais qui pourrait tout aussi bien mener vers un univers beaucoup plus large où il ne serait même plus vraiment question de zombies. Pour ce qu'elle aurait à raconter, une suite serait donc a priori moins excitante et pertinente, mais il ne faut pas oublier que Netflix a fait un prequel d’Army of the Dead sans zombies et prouve un peu plus chaque jour que ses abonnés ne sont à l'abri de rien. C'est très probable, compte tenu du succès mondial de la série coréenne actuellement millions d'heure du drama coréen ont été regardés dans 91 pays du monde, durant la première semaine de mise en ligne. Mais aussi parce que la fin de la saison 1 ouvre pas mal de portes. Explications. En quoi All of Us are Dead est différente des autres séries de zombie coréennes ? Attention spoilers ! Le bombardement de Hyosan a été brutal. Le dernier rapport militaire évoqué dans le final révèle que sur les 170 000 habitants qui vivaient dans la ville avant cette épidémie, 110 000 s'en sont sortis vivants. On compte donc 60 000 victimes à la fin de All of Us are Dead. Un drame humain qui, fatalement, va bouleverser la vie des survivants dans la probable saison 2. D'autant que, bien sûr, nous savons pertinemment que le virus Jonas est toujours aussi actif. Car plus tôt dans ce dernier épisode, le fils et la femme infectés du créateur sont enlevés par l'armée pour des raisons inconnues. Certainement pour rechercher un remède... à moins que ce ne soit pour exploiter le virus et le transformer en arme de destruction massive.... Quoi qu'il en soit, on rappellera que Nam-ra porte également le virus en elle, ainsi que le reste des personnes infectées auxquelles elle fait allusion dans les derniers instants de cette saison 1. Qui est-elle réellement ? Ainsi, même sans zombies pour se lancer, une deuxième saison aurait encore plein de pistes à explorer... Reste plus à Netflix qu'à confirmer la saison 2 de All of Us are Dead dans les semaines qui viennent.
